About This Event

What must be redesigned to receive AI?

Most discussions of AI alignment ask how machines can be made compatible with human values. This salon begins with the reciprocal question:

How must our institutions change so that powerful AI expands human agency, shared prosperity, and liberty?

Join us for the opening gathering of Institutions for the Intelligent Age, a public reading and discussion series about the social architecture of an AI-enabled future.

Our first reading is Glen Weyl, James Evans and Chris White’s Noema essay, “What Humanity Needs to Flourish in the Next Decade.” The paper proposes “reverse alignment”: redesigning the institutions surrounding AI.

Please read the paper beforehand

How the evening works

We will begin with a quick summary of the paper to reboot your brain. We will then move into groups for conversations:

  1. Understand: What is the paper really proposing?

  2. Apply: Where could these ideas matter in practice?

  3. Build: What institutional experiment, project or coalition would be needed to act on them?

More information on the series here.
We will provide soft drinks.
