About This Event

Mathematical Sociodynamics reading group (Psychohistory but real)

Can we predict human behavior using the mathematics of physics?

People walking through crowds spontaneously form lanes. Traffic jams emerge without central coordination. Opinions spread, societies polarize, and millions of individual decisions produce collective patterns.

Can we model these phenomena mathematically? More importantly, can we use those models to predict what happens next?

Inspired by the fictional science of psychohistory in Isaac Asimov's Foundation, this reading group explores its real-world counterpart: mathematical sociodynamics.

We'll investigate how mathematical models, statistical mechanics, stochastic processes, and dynamical systems can describe and predict collective human behavior.

📖 First reading — Easy

Social Force Model for Pedestrian Dynamics — Helbing & Molnár (1995)

A short, accessible paper modeling pedestrians as particles responding to destinations, obstacles, and one another. Simple equations generate surprisingly complex crowd behavior. Can we predict how people move through a crowded space?

📖 Follow-up reading — More mathematical

The Master Equation Approach to Nonlinear Economics — Weidlich & Braun (1992)

From predicting how people walk to predicting how they make decisions. We'll explore how master equations and probabilistic transitions can model collective choices and large-scale social change.

About the group

An informal, collaborative reading group for people interested in mathematics, physics, complexity, economics, and human behavior.

We'll read papers, work through equations, challenge assumptions, and explore what these models can actually predict.

No previous experience with sociodynamics is required. Some calculus helps, but reading is optional and curiosity is encouraged.

The ambition is psychohistory. The method is mathematics. The test is prediction.
