Punk Software Hack Night: Own your interfaces

Join us for a night of building tools that put you in control of how you interact with the data and systems in your life.

We live in an era were big tech is creating monopolies to gather up as much power as possible, and designing apps to lock us into modes of use that are aligned with their incentives instead of ours.

The challenge tonight is to craft your own interface — and commoditize the services that can still provide value.

What might this look like?

• Personal messaging hub over slack, email, linkedin, discord, imessage, etc. After all - we had basic messaging UI decades ago — yet companies still find a way to bundle it with other services that seek to pry our attention away from the relationships that matter.

• Personal content hub mixing instagram, twitter, youtube, facebook, etc. Even better - bypass the platform algorithm and connect directly to creators, or optimize your own personalized feed algorithm.

• Personal scrapbook over iphotos, google drive, email, messages. Find the data you treasure and make your own story out of it — served out of somewhere you trust.

• Agentic operating system that commoditizes models, harnesses, and grok/muse/assistant-likes. If tokens are gas, build the engine that can run off anything.

• Rich data interaction over a hotswappable data store: notion, github, google sheets, obsidian, etc.

API-ify everything — make capitalism work for you.

SCHEDULE:

6pm - 6:30pm — meet people, brainstorm ideas. There'll be 2 groups — one for folks seeking teams or ideas, and the other for folks to just get started building!

6:30pm — kickoff. Some quick words. Doors close 6:45.

6:30 - 9:00pm — quiet time, work solo or in groups.

9:00 - 9:30pm — demos. We'll open up first to projects built today, then to work built on top of preexisting projects. Submit your projects by pushing to github and adding the topic tag #punksoftware.

9:30pm - 10pm — Try out other folks' projects and ask them questions about how they built it!
