What Can We Fairly Assume About Alien Minds?
About This Event
What Can We Fairly Assume About Alien Minds?
We often imagine that aliens will look and act like us. That they'll want what we want: more energy, more territory, more stars. But we only have one example of a mind, and it's ours.
Join OtherMinds for an evening on xenopsychology: the study of how alien minds might work, and the assumptions we bring to it. We'll open with a short talk, moving from the projections we can defend to the ones we can't:
Physics and math: the safest common ground, or is it?
Darwinian logic: must anything that evolved also want to expand?
Convergent minds: what evolution keeps reinventing on Earth, and what has happened only once
The Kardashev scale: a 1960s ranking of civilizations by appetite, and what it says about us
Then we'll open it up for an hour of conversation. Where should we draw the line? What should "advanced" really mean? Are we looking for empires, or for neighbors?
No background needed, just curiosity.
