About This Event

Join us for the inaugural gathering of the Cypherpunk Society at Frontier Tower—a practitioner community for open-source digital self-defense, privacy tools, investigative literacy, and freedom bandwidth.

Agenda (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM)

Talk — The History of the Cypherpunks & the Bay Area Counterculture (Morgan G Hough - m9h): How the Cypherpunk movement emerged right here in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1992 out of Berkeley's Community Memory (the world's first public BBS), The WELL, Mondo 2000 ("St. Jude" Milhon), Eric Hughes's A Cypherpunk's Manifesto, and John Gilmore's cypherpunks@toad.com server in Haight-Ashbury—and how it connects to modern vertical villages and bio/tech hackerspaces like Paris's La Paillasse and La Quadrature du Net.

What We're Building — Weekly Clinics, Workshops & Speaker Series: A walkthrough of our upcoming afternoon clinics and collaborative tracks: Digital Hygiene, EFF Surveillance Self-Defense & Self-Hosting: From Andrej Karpathy's Digital Hygiene baseline (YubiKeys, NextDNS/Pi-hole, Mullvad/Tor Browser) to self-hosted cloud replacements (Vaultwarden, Headscale, Syncthing, CryptPad) and a permanent Tails OS & offline Wikipedia (Kiwix) USB flashing station. Counter-Surveillance, Ad-Tech & Cognitive Security: Dissecting spyware disclosures from The Citizen Lab (with the Mobile Verification Toolkit & OONI Probe), auditing ad-market Real-Time Bidding (RTB) & browser fingerprinting (Blacklight & Cover Your Tracks), and collaborating with the Stanford Cognitive Security Task Force and UC Law SF. Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) & Public-Interest Data: Group solve sessions on the Bellingcat Open Source Challenge, OCCRP Aleph, ProPublica data tools, and Chaos Computer Club (CCC) screenings. Freedom Bandwidth: Running Tor Snowflake proxies, obfs4 bridges, and partnering with non-profit transit providers (Emerald Onion & Nos Oignons).

**Call to Action — Aaron Swartz Day & International Hackathon (Sunday, No How Frontier Tower members can participate in this Sunday's Aaron Swartz Day & International Hackathon (Nov. 8) with the Internet Archive, Noisebridge, and the Freedom of the Press Foundation—including contribution tracks for SecureDrop (originally Aaron's DeadDrop), Open Library, and our Wikipedia/Wikimedia community fundraiser.
